  • The Illusion of Productivity: Why You are Busy But Not Moving Forward

    handwriting on a memo pad

Have you ever noticed how easy it is to stay busy—but not with the things that move the needle in your life?

We fill our days with chores, errands, and endless to-do lists.
We say yes to social events we’re not excited about and lose hours down rabbit holes of “research” or scrolling.

It all looks like productivity on the surface. But deep down, we know we’re avoiding the real work—the work that aligns with our deepest dreams and ambitions.

Why? Because that work is hard.

It’s unfamiliar. It stirs up fear.
Fear of failing. Fear of being seen. Fear of realizing we might not be good enough.

So instead, we hide in busyness. It’s easier to check off mundane tasks than to face the vulnerability of chasing what truly matters.

    The Weight of Overwhelm

Another layer we pile onto our to-do list is overwhelm.
The moment we think about everything we need to do to reach our dreams, the weight starts to crush us. It feels impossible—like climbing a mountain without a map.

So instead of starting, we shut down. We procrastinate, distract ourselves, or abandon the dream entirely.
The burden feels so heavy that avoidance becomes the easier, more comfortable choice.

A Personal Story: From a Thought to Purpose

Since 2015, I had a quiet dream of starting my own nonprofit—something that would make a real, tangible difference.

I was in university at the time, and although the idea lingered in the background, I didn’t know how to begin.
Life was full—midterms, assignments, part-time jobs, and deadlines. There was always something more “urgent.”

    Then in 2017, something shifted.
I was sitting in my room, staring out the window at the lush green trees, their leaves swaying gently in the wind.
    A thought came to me:

So many of my friends care deeply about giving back—what if I just asked them?
Maybe five of them would say yes.

To my surprise, every single person I asked wanted to be involved.
And just like that, we had a team of nine passionate individuals ready to bring the vision to life.

We didn’t have a clear direction at first, so we started meeting once a week to brainstorm. Slowly, clarity began to form. Within couple of weeks, we had a shared vision and designated roles for everyone.

That’s how Bliss Foundation – Sharing Khushiyan (Punjabi for “happiness”) was born.

Our mission was simple: to support under-resourced schools in India—starting with access to clean drinking water and safe, functional classrooms.

We took it one step at a time. After just two fundraising events, we raised enough money to support a school in India.
We provided clean water and built classrooms that could withstand the region’s extreme temperatures, creating a healthier learning environment for the children.

I remember sitting down in 2018, reflecting on everything we had accomplished. It felt surreal.
Just a few months earlier, I had no idea where to begin. And yet, by taking that one small step, I watched a dream become reality.

Had I never acted on that moment of inspiration, I wonder if the dream would’ve just faded away—buried under the weight of everything else.

    How to Begin

    The first step is self-awareness.
You have to begin noticing your own patterns—the thoughts you repeat, the excuses you reach for, the subtle ways you self-sabotage.

And when you recognize them, do it without judgment. This isn’t about shame; it’s about understanding.
It’s human to avoid discomfort. But ask yourself: for how long?

The longer you avoid the work, the easier it becomes to keep avoiding it.
Eventually, your dream starts to fade—not because it wasn’t possible, but because you slowly let it slip out of reach.

Once you become aware, the next step is movement—small, consistent actions that reconnect you with your dream.

You don’t need to overhaul your life overnight.
In fact, trying to do so is often just overwhelm in disguise.

Start with one thing. One step.

You don’t need to know the entire path before you begin—sometimes, all you need is the next step.
And when you take it, the one after that starts to reveal itself.

These small actions compound over time. They begin to shift your identity—from someone who avoids, to someone who shows up.

Each time you choose action over avoidance, you affirm that your dream matters—and that you are willing to meet it halfway.

    Start Where You Are

Your dream doesn’t need perfection—it needs your presence.

You don’t need all the answers—just the courage to take the next small step.
The work that matters is often the most uncomfortable, but it’s also the most rewarding.

    So, pause.
Look honestly at how you are spending your time.
Ask yourself what you’re really avoiding.

    And then—start small.
    Start messy.
    Start scared.
    But most importantly, start.

Your future self will thank you. “One small action is all it takes to change your story. What’s your step today?”
